Brownwood ISD made a request to the city to implement the school speed zone mainly over concern about drivers using cell phones in the area while driving.

“We’ve had a few complaints so we asked the city to put up the signs, more for the cell phone use than the speed,” said BISD Superintendent Reece Blincoe.   “This probably should have been done a long time ago, but it was never addressed, mainly because the school is in a residential area and we didn’t have much problem.”

The city council briefing sheet for Tuesday’s meeting states that although there are a minimum number of conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians at the campus, there exist a large number of youth drivers with limited experience.  The traffic volume is typically greatest at the start and end of the class days.

If the ordinance to implement the high school speed zone is approved as expected,  state law prohibiting use of cell phones in school zones will require the posting of the signs so the “no cell phone” law can be enforced.

“I think it’s a good thing that the signs are going up, and I’d like to thank the city for their support,” Blincoe said.

The Brownwood city council will consider the school speed zone ordinance on first reading Tuesday and on second & third reading at their following meeting for final approval.
