Many have been involved in a well known Christmastime tradition, the ringing of the bell at the Salvation Army’s Red Kettles. Even Santa did his share on Tuesday.

Santa along with a couple of Howard Payne students rang the bell from 6:00pm-8:00pm Tuesday night at Wal-Mart in Brownwood.  According to Paul Coghlan, Advisory Board chairman of the Salvation Army, it was a record turn out with lots of people wanting to see Santa.

Coghlan stated that he is always impressed at the way the community gives to this cause.

“Brownwood has to be the most generous community I have been ringing the bell at Wal-Mart for the past 3 years and so many people donate to the Red Kettle and are teaching their children to put money in the kettle,” said Coghlan.  “It leaves me with a warm feeling to know that so many good people live in our City; Brownwood is an example of how a Christian community should act.”

Volunteers will be ringing the bell until Christmas Eve, so there is still time to give to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle. Volunteers have included individuals, families, churches, firemen and other various organizations this year according to organizers.

“The red kettle money raised goes to help many families here in Brown County,” said Caren Friend, Salvation Army Service Unit Region 3 Representative. “I’ve lived in Brownwood for 16 years and this is the most giving community, I love the people of Brownwood and how they always come together.  Thanks for your support Brownwood!”

Friend and Coghlan stated that although times are hard, people have been very generous.

“We have had all kinds of groups ringing the bell, doing a great job and getting some great turn outs.  Some have played flutes, horns and done caroling, which draws attention and people feel good about what we are doing and tend to be more giving,” said Friend. “I think even though we all have hard times, we realize that those who don’t have anything have it even harder.”
