The Santa Anna Mountaineers had a lot to be thankful for during the holiday break. Santa Anna still kept their playoff run alive this past Friday as they took on the Blum Bobcats in Blanket.

The Mountaineer football team took the field under the coaching of Cameron Norris, Robert Adams, and David Garcia, and it was evident that the Mountaineer coaching staff had one thing in mind….defense. The Mountaineers once again relied on their defense to pull off the victory against a very stout Blum football team. The Mountaineers made sure that the Bobcats earned every yard and only gave up one big play on a missed coverage assignment. Senior QB, Talon King, had three picks for the Mountaineers, returning one for a touchdown. King also returned a kick-off for a touchdown.

The flipside of the ball was a different story. Unlike previous games, the Mountaineers had a season high six fumbles and one interception. The ball was turned over five out of the seven times. Luckily, the Mountaineers were still able to score 79 points in the game. Junior running back Michael Valencia took control of the rushing attack over the Bobcats.

Next up for the Mountaineers will be a very tough and physical Gordon team. The Longhorns are coming off a victory over Savoy. The Gordon Longhorns won their district as did the Mountaineers. This week’s game will be played Friday in Comanche.   Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30pm. The winner will go on to face the winner of the Abbott/Oakwood game which is being played in Mexia on Friday as well.

Gordon is an 8 point favorite over Santa Anna. The Mountaineers wouldn’t have it any other way. They have been the underdog since the beginning of the season. The underdogs are still in the play-offs!
