The Santa Anna High School Tennis teams traveled to Abilene April 6-7 for the District 11A Tennis Tournament both teams did well, with the boys finishing in third place, and the girls team taking the District Championship.  Pictured above, left to right, are Carlee Coats, Makaylah Morris, Kendra Sanchez, Sarah Herrod, Coach Robinett, Paige Guerrero, Kindsey Holland, and Ashley Gibson.

GuerreroHerrodTennis11The girls team was lead by the doubles duo of Sarah Herrod and Paige Guerrero (pictured to the left). The two took first place honors, but not before a very tough match in the finals against Paint Rock’s Collins and Grelle. The two dropped the first set 7-6 in a tie-breaker before storming back to take the second set 6-0, and the third set 6-3. The first place finish qualifies the doubles team for the Regional Tennis Tournament to be held on April 20-21 in Abilene.

The team of Ashley Gibson and Carlee Coats placed third in the district meet. The doubles team lost to Paint Rock in the semi-finals, but defeated the doubles team of Gilley and Villereal from Baird to take the third spot. MorrisWhitleyTennis11

The mixed doubles team of Makaylah Morris and Dillan Whitley (pictured to the right) also took three sets to defeat Bronte’s Richey and Perez (6-4, 2-6, 6-3). This was only the second tournament for the mixed team, and the top finish qualifies them for the Regional Tournament also.

Kindsey Holland (pictured bottom left) will also move on to the Regional Tournament due to a second place finish in the girls singles bracket. Kinsey lost to Baird’s Rebeca Brock (6-1, 6-4) in the finals, but had already won a match against third place finisher Stephanie Bledsoe of Panther KindseyHollandTennisCreek to stay out of a challenge situation for second. Kendra Sanchez of Santa Anna took home the fourth place spot in the girls singles bracket.

The boys doubles team of Spencer Gilbreath and Kenneth McMillan lost in three sets to the eventual second place finishers from Paint Rock in the semi-finals, but later defeated the team of Williamson and Zepeda from Hermleigh for the third place spot. The doubles team will be alternates to the Regional Tournament.

The JV boys doubles division was dominated by Santa Anna players with Justin McElrath and Dakota Enriquez taking the first place spot over teammates Zachary Diaz and Michael Valencia.

On the girls JV side, Bambi Yebra took the second place medal in singles.
