Sam Moss announces he is running for Brown County Court at Law judge. He has been honored to serve Brown County as First Assistant District Attorney since 2006. Sam has given much thought to his decision to run and strongly believes he can better serve the community by bringing about positive change in the Brown County Court at Law.
The Brown County Court at Law is primarily responsible for hearing misdemeanor criminal cases, child custody matters, and various family law issues. Sam has devoted his career thus far to protecting the community through criminal prosecution. Sam believes it is equally important to protect the rights of families and children. He understands the importance of giving each of these cases the utmost attention and making fair and impartial rulings based on facts and circumstances. Sam is so passionate about these issues because he has three young children of his own and appreciates the significant impact his rulings will have on families.
Sam graduated from Brownwood High School in 1995. While attending BHS he was a member of the National Honor Society and played varsity football and baseball. Sam earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas A&M University in 1999 after successfully juggling a full course load and full-time job.
Sam next attended law school at Texas Tech University where he was a finalist in both the mock trial and moot court competitions and travelled throughout the US on a competitive mock trial team. He also was a contributing editor for the Texas Bank Lawyer, a journal that focuses on legal issues in the banking industry. While attending law school Sam gained valuable experience clerking for the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Lubbock and the Wagstaff Law Firm in Abilene. Sam graduated cum laude from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2002.
After law school Sam began his career with the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office where he held leadership roles as a chief in both the misdemeanor and felony divisions, supervising and training other prosecutors in the courtroom. While in Dallas County, Sam successfully prosecuted high profile cases including numerous capital murders, murders, sexual assaults, aggravated robberies, and various other felony and misdemeanor offenses.
Texas Monthly Magazine named Sam a Rising Stars Super Lawyer in both 2005 and 2007, an award granted to less than 2.5% of attorneys in Texas.
Sam moved back to Brownwood in 2006 to raise his three boys in the town where he grew up. After accepting a position in the 35th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, he became an integral member of law enforcement in the community. Throughout his career Sam has prosecuted approximately 200 trials and has handled thousands of both misdemeanor and felony cases. Sam has never lost a felony case.
In 2010 the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center in Burnet presented Sam with the Child Advocate of the Year Award in recognition of his perseverance and success in prosecuting child sexual assault cases. Sam also served an incremental role in founding the Heart of Texas Children’s Advocacy Center in Early, where victims of child abuse currently receive local services. Sam now serves as vice president for the center and is actively involved in improving and expanding services provided to child victims in Brown County and surrounding areas.
Sam is a member of the Brown County Bar Association and served as its president from 2007-2012. He was a member of the Dallas County Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyer’s Association, and the National District Attorney’s Association. He is actively involved with the Texas District and County Attorney’s Association.
In his personal life, Sam devotes his time to his three sons, Luke (10), Lance (7), and Levi (5). Sam not only dedicates his time to his own children but also to youth in the community. This past summer he was the director of the TTAB State Baseball Tournament. He coaches youth baseball, soccer, and basketball and is an avid runner. Sam attends and is a member of First United Methodist Church in Brownwood where he has taught children’s Sunday School.
Sam’s father is Reagan Moss who worked for Santa Fe Railroad and later for the Texas Youth Commission, where he retired as the director of security. Sam’s mother, Jeana, worked her entire career for Brownwood Independent School District (BISD). She taught at South Elementary, was the director of Special Education for BISD, was principal at Northwest Elementary, and upon retirement was assistant superintendent for BISD. Sam’s parents both reside in Brownwood where they stay actively involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
Brown County is Sam’s home. He was raised here and, seven years ago, made the decision to return to raise his children. Sam wants the best for the county not only for him and his children but also for the families of Brown County.
Sam asks that you consider him for Brown County Court at Law Judge and give him the opportunity to put his knowledge, energy, and passion to work for the people of this county.
