TEMPLE – Sampson Chappell Guthrie, Jr. passed away Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010 at Scott & White Hospital.
Sam Guthrie, Jr. was born October 21, 1931 in Brownwood, TX where he graduated in 1949 from Brownwood High School. Sam went on to graduate from Texas A&M University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, and was a member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band and Corps of Cadets. After graduating, Sam served in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant in the 44th Tank ABN of the 82nd Airborne Division.
He married Catherine “Cathy” Marie Moore on November 15, 1957 in Brownwood. They moved to Temple in 1960 where Sam founded Guthrie Oil Company, Inc., which he operated until his retirement in 1998.
A lifetime Aggie, Sam was an Endowed Member of the 12th Man Foundation. He also served as Legislative Liaison for the Texas Oil Marketers Association (TOMA) which is now the TPCA.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, S. C. “Chappell” Guthrie, Sr. and Zettie Jewell Guthrie.
No public services are planned, but a private memorial for family will be held at a later date at the Guthrie Ranch in Zephyr, TX.
SURVIVORS: His wife, Cathy Guthrie; sons, Sam Guthrie III and Keith Guthrie of Fort Worth, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Gordon Baird of Thompson’s Station, TN; grandchildren, Chappell, Justin, Julie, London, and Trey.
