Ruth McBurney Lilly died on May 10, 2010 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. She was born on March 5, 1921, the only child of Beulah (Daniel) and Murray McBurney of Zephyr, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunt, Judy Daniel Sewell, and her husband of 64 years, Bob Lilly. She is survived by her two daughters, Michele Bock of Brownwood and Niki Lockwood, and her husband, Joe Lockwood, of Blanco, Texas. She is survived by four grandsons, Britt Stokes of Fort Worth, Texas, Scott Lockwood of Blanco, Texas, Christian Lockwood of SanAntonio, Texas and Jason Bock of Buffalo, New York. She is survived by one granddaughter, Vickie Adams of Farmington, New Mexico. She is survived by 10 great grandchildren.
Ruth was an artist in several media, an elementary school teacher for several years, a mother, a jack of all trades, and a “devout” atheist. She had a lively interest in politics and was a life-long Democrat. She attended college at North Texas Teachers College in Denton, Texas as an art major. She studied religion, philosophy, science and literature.
Ruth’s body will be cremated under the direction of Netherton Funeral Home & Cremations. At her request, there will be no funeral, but there will be a wake for her from 3 to 5 pm on Saturday, May 15, at the Art Center, located at 215 Fisk Street in Brownwood.
The family requests memorials be made to the Zephyr Volunteer Fire Department or the Brownwood Public Library.
