Roger Carlisle Blake, 62, of Tyler, Texas, formerly of Brownwood, went home to be with his Lord Friday morning, May 4th, at UTSW St. Paul Hospital in Dallas. He was born in Brownwood on September 15, 1949 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Blake, the third of five children. He grew up in Brownwood, graduating from Brownwood High School in 1967. Later, pursuing his passion for learning, he received multiple degrees, including an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, and two master’s degrees in mathematics and humanities.
He began his career at West Texas Printing Company, going on to work for Shell Oil in Houston and later owning his own company in Brownwood. Roger’s own struggles in school inspired him to begin a career in education. He taught for many years at Brownwood High School, Texas State Technical College in Brownwood, and later teaching humanities and mathematics at Tyler Junior College in Tyler. He had a passion for helping students overcome their own learning difficulties.
A faithful Christian, Roger was a longtime member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church while living in Brownwood and later Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. He was also a member of the Rotary club and enjoyed learning about history, especially World War II and Texas history.
He married Loma Sue Christian on May 21, 1989 in Brownwood. Together they raised Christy, Carrie, and James before welcoming Mark into the world.
Roger is preceded in death by his father, Robert H. Blake; his brother, Bill Blake; nephew, Will Blake; and grandson, Calan Chambers. He is survived by his mother, Mary Sue Blake; wife, Loma; children, Christy Novelo and husband Ernesto, Carrie Chambers and husband Cortney, James Logue, and Mark; grandchildren, Jay, Jon, Christian, Ernesto, Asher, and Chase; brothers Steve and wife Pam, Paul; sister, Beverly Norris and husband Larry; sister-in-law Kathy Blake; and nieces and nephews.
Roger’s desire for his life was to leave a legacy that glorified Christ. He succeeded by living the life of a faithful husband, loving father, and respected teacher. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and hundreds of students.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM on Monday, May 7th at Davis-Morris Funeral Home, 800 Center Ave, Brownwood. The funeral will be held at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, 1815 Coggin Ave., Brownwood, on Tuesday, May 8th at 11 AM with a graveside service to follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early.
