The “Annual Legends Celebrate the Legends Banquet” will be held on April 24, 2010 at 6:30pm at the Howard Payne University Mabee Center.
The banquet will be especially meaningful because restoration work has begun on the Rufus F. Hardin building. The former “Colored” school building will both house an African American museum and serve as a multi-use facility with programs to benefit the youth and the community at large. The museum board is very excited to announce that the Texas State historical marker for the R. F. Hardin School building is now in place.
Dress will be semi-formal. The theme this year will be “The Rufus F. Hardin School-Serving a People Then-Serving Our Community Now and Beyond.” The Keynote Speaker will be Mr. Dallas Houston, well known Brownwood sportscaster. Mr. Draco Miller will be the Master of Ceremonies.
This year’s Willie Lee Gay Legends Award recipient is Roderick Jones, Sr. Mr. Jones was the first African American to work for the Brown County Sheriffs Department in the jail division. He has been a board member of the Brownwood ISD unopposed for the past 15 years. Jones attended Sam Houston State University and Howard Payne University. He has worked for 22 years in corrections and has been working for 3M Corporation for the past 15 years.
