GainesRetamay Gaines passed away Monday, May 11, 2015, at her residence.  Visitation will be held from 12:00 Noon until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at Stevens Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 2:00 in Coleman Cemetery.  The Rev. Brad Slaten, pastor of First United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Retamay Brown Gaines was born March 2, 1917 in Coleman, Texas to Fenton and Alma Thompson Brown.  She attended school in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1934.  She married Maynard Gaines in 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1991.   She worked more than fifty years in the Coleman business community, having retired most recently from Coleman County State Bank as Vice President and Assistant Trust Officer.    She worked in various businesses in Coleman from the time that she was a Senior in high school until she retired in 1988 after a 28 year career in banking.

She was active in First United Methodist Church, serving as trustee, lay leader, Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.  In 1982 she was named “Outstanding Citizen” by the Coleman Chamber of Commerce.  She was a member of the Captain William Buckner Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.  She was also a member of the Magna Carta Dames and the Huguenots.

As a member of the Good Neighbor Club, she worked many years with the Texas Home Demonstration Association, serving as state president.  She was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of Holiday Hill.

Survivors include cousins, Tim Thompson, Sr., Ted Thompson, Carol Thompson Miller, Barry Thompson, Jack Lauder, Amelia Miller Ausman, Mary Helen Wilkens, William Robert Thompson, Alan Gaines, Richard Gaines and Dennis Maynard Gaines.
