Operation Cookie Drop will be held on December 14th for the 21st Cavalry and the Kentucky Air Brigade who are conducting pre-deployment training at the Camp Bowie Training Facility.
Area residents are asked to show their support by making a batch or two or three of cookies for the Military. The cookies need to be in a foil pan with a clear lid and dropped off to the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce by 11am on December 14th.
Local clubs, churches, organizations and individuals are encouraged to show their support and bake some cookies. Let’s show the Kentucky Air Brigade how Central Texas supports our Military. Last year our community pulled together and delivered hundreds of homemade cookies to these soldiers.
Dr. Steve Kelly of Brownwood gave more information about the groups training at Camp Bowie who will receive Operation Cookie Drop:
The 21st Cavalry Brigade (Air Combat) that is our official Community Partnership Unit is training the 8-229 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion “The Flying Tigers”. They have been at Camp Bowie for the past week. They will be there until December 18, 2010. 8-229 stands for the 8th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion of the 229th Aviation Regiment. They trace their lineage back to the original Flying Tigers under Claire Chennault that fought for the Chinese before the United States entered WWII.
The 8-229 is a United States Army Reserve Battalion stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The Commanding Officer is LTC James “Jim” Posey. The Command Sergeant Major is Sammy Sablan. The 8-229 ARB (Attack Reconnaissance Battalion) will graduate from the 21st Cavalry Brigade’s training program after this exercise, and are preparing for deployment to Iraq in January 2011 in support of Operation New Dawn.
There are 410 soldiers from 8-229 ARB which includes 35 soldiers from the 1204th Aviation Support Battalion of Conroe, Texas. There are 231 soldiers with the 21st Cavalry Brigade.
“Some homemade cookies for all of these great Americans would be greatly appreciated,” stated Dr. Kelly. “Since all of the soldiers are away from home at Christmas time and will be leaving for deployment next month, I am sure that they will greatly appreciate Operation Cookie Drop.”
