The Brownwood High School Theatre Department will host the opening performance of their fall production of “The Little Mermaid: An Underwater Adventure” at 7:00 p.m. tonight, November 4th. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the performances.
The play is based on the well known fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince.
This adaptation of the story is not what many people might expect with interesting characters and unexpected plot twists, according to director Larry Mathis.
“It’s based on the same story by Hans Christian Andersen, but it is a totally different adaptation,” Mathis said. “We wanted to get as far away from the Disney version as we could although there are some Disney-ish elements.”
The set is colorful and vibrant and features a triple video backdrop that gives the feel of being underwater from most of the production.
“We used the same video concept from last year’s production of “Peter Pan” and expanded it for this set,” Mathis said.
The play runs about 1 hour and 30 minutes and will be open to the public for 5 performances in the Dorothy McIntosh Fine Arts Center auditorium at the high school. Tickets will be available at the door – $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Public performance dates and times include:
Monday, November 4…7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, November 5…7:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 7…7:00 p.m.
Saturday, November 9…2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
