Brown County Relay for Life honored cancer survivors with a dinner Thursday at Victory Life Academy Chapel.
The dinner is hosted annually before the event to recognize those who have fought the battle against the disease. A meal including desert, entertainment and games was provided. Sponsors of the dinner were Victory Life Church, Hook & Anchor, Whataburger, Underwood’s, Lemon’s BBQ, Sticks BBQ, Brownwood Regional Medical Center and G4S.
Relay Survivor Chair Marian Deans spoke of the success of the event.
“It really warmed my heart to see our community come together for an evening to celebrate our survivors, our heroes,” said Deans. “We are already making plans for next year’s to be even more special.”
This year’s relay honorees and their families attended the dinner as well. Child survivor 6-year-old Yelana Martin and adult survivor Brandy Bishop will each arrive at the event Friday evening via helicopter. At about 7:30 PM recognitions will be made from the football field which will then lead into the survivor lap led by Martin and Bishop. All cancer survivors in attendance will start the Relay with their traditional first lap around the track.
The event will be dedicated to the memory of Cade Boyle, who was just 9-years-old when he passed away shortly after last year’s relay in June after a brave battle against Ewing’s Sarcoma Cancer.
The public is invited to attend the relay which will be held Friday, June 6 from 7 PM-7 AM at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood and is themed “We Can Be Heroes.” The event is an all-night fundraiser which portrays the battle fought by survivors as those attending continually walk the track and raise money for cancer awareness and research. This is a free event, although there are booths with items to purchase and games to play as their fundraisers.
