Entries for the 15th Annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit arrived this weekend with talented artists promising the public a great show to enjoy.
Artists began dropping off artwork Friday evening and the last entries were accepted through noon Saturday at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center. Entries such as pencil drawings, paintings, photography, to mixed media, pieces with moving parts and large sculpture pieces were entered into the exhibit.
The juror, Billy Hassell, judged entries Saturday from 12 noon to 4 PM. Hassell is a native Texan and artist who has painted nature inspired works for over 25 years. His colorful and expressive artworks, frequently featuring birds and indigenous plants and animals of Texas and the Gulf Coast region have been exhibited nationwide and are included in the permanent collections of the Houston Museum of Art, the Menil Collection, the Fort Worth Modern, The Dallas Museum of Art and numerous other public and private collections.
Organizers state this is the largest number of entries in the exhibit’s history with 387 pieces of art submitted from 174 artists. Of those, 132 pieces from 93 artists were selected for display in the exhibit, which will be open to the public February 3rd through 15th at the Depot Civic and Cultural Center in Brownwood.
“It’s a fantastic show. The quality is so magnificent,” said show volunteer Melanie Naylor. “The entries are better than we’ve ever had, there’s not a bad piece.”
Organizers stated that entries came from all over the state, many driving long hours to get their entries into the exhibit. They stated that there were many from Granbury and Kerrville, some from Killeen and even one from Palestine, Texas. Students, professional artists, professors and many from other walks of life have entered the exhibit creating quite a variety of subject matter and style.
According to organizers, many artists commented on the efficiency of the entry process, which was broken into several stations. Volunteers stated that they enjoyed helping with the entry process as well, having the chance to see a preview of an amazing amount of talent entered into the exhibit.
