Raymond Cowan passed away at Westwood Health and Rehab in Springdale, Arkansas on Thursday, January 14, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted at Salt Creek Baptist Church in Early, TX at 2:00 PM Friday, January 22 with Brother Jimmy Mize officiating. Visitation will take place the previous evening at Heartland Funeral Home in Early, TX from 6-8 PM. Burial will follow in Cox Cemetery in McCullough County, TX.
Mr. Cowan was born February 25, 1921 in McCullough County to William Sterling Cowan and Virgie Eliza Turner Cowan. He attended school at Milburn and graduated from Rochelle High School in 1940. He married Nina Brown January 15, 1941. He served in the National Guard prior to enlisting into the Armed Forces serving in China, Burma, and India in WWII.
After his service, he earned BS degree from Howard Payne University, Master of Teaching degree from Harden Simmons University, and did additional work at McMurry College. Mr. Cowan was a teacher, coach, and administrator for 30 years in the school districts of Zephyr, Santa Anna, Wingate, Blackwell, Abilene and Wylie. He was Assistant Administrator for Hendrick Home for Children in Abilene, TX following retirement from public schools. Over the years, he served faithfully in the local Baptist church also serving as Deacon.He is survived by wife Nina Cowan (Springdale, AR); daughter Anita Lawson (Fayetteville, AR); grandson Jacob Lawson and wife Mindy with sons Luke and Drew (Fayetteville, AR); granddaughter Katie Osterberg and husband Jason with children Josie and Jonas (Rogers, AR); sisters Alda Deavers, June Gresham and Tressa Finnigan with several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by daughter Sandra Pabst and brothers Preston Cowan, Odell Cowan, and Herman Cowan.
