Here in Brown County the Child Welfare Board is once more having a month long drive in April to sell “Raindrops” for $1.00 each to “Shower the Rainbow Room.” There will also be a poster contest among the children in Brown County. The theme is “Stop Child Abuse.” There will be first and second prizes in several age groups and a Grand Prize given away.
At the Heartland Mall, the theme is “From Raindrops to Rainbows” and raindrops will be sold at each merchant’s location in the Mall for a donation to the Rainbow Room. The donor will be able to put their name on a raindrop that will then be displayed. This year the sale of raindrops has been expanded to many other merchants in the area and many of the service organizations in the schools.
On Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 12:00pm-3:00pm, there will be a Grand Event at the Mall where booths will be set up to represent many of the child related services in the area. These will include Girl Scouts, WIC, County Health Department, Police doing Children’s ID packets, etc. and of course, the Child Welfare Board will have a booth where literature aimed at positive parenting and stopping child abuse will be distributed.
On that day, the prizes for the poster contest will be awarded. The prize money has been graciously donated by Heart of Texas Internal Medicine for the second year in a row.
“We have no local TV station, but we have the local radio station KOXE as a co-sponsor with the Heartland Mall, and they will be doing radio spots throughout the month to promote our Drive to Stop Child Abuse,” said Kitty Cavanaugh of the Brown County Child Welfare Board. “We also will get press coverage with letters to the editors and asking the County Commissioners Court to declare the month of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.”
The child welfare board is also going to have the Heart Gallery set up in the Mall for the month of April.
“This Event last year was very successful for the Rainbow Room, and there was much information shared with the citizens of Brown County to help Stop Child Abuse,” said Cavanaugh. “We are hoping that in the present economical climate, that we will be as successful this year.”
