UPDATE – 6:00 PM – Brownwood Police report that the suspect involved in the high speed chase Saturday morning was apprehended Saturday evening.

According to Brownwood Assistant Chief James Fuller, after the pursuit, Flores eventually ran to a house by the airport and had been there for an unknown time until police were alerted by the homeowners.  Flores ran from the residence as law enforcement arrived and was apprehended by Brown County Sheriff’s deputies.

Brownwood Police Officer Bruce Spruill brought Flores in to the Brownwood Police Station and interviewed him, receiving a full confession, said Fuller.

“Great job by all law enforcement, Brownwood and Early Police Departments and Brown County Sheriff’s Office,” said Fuller.  “We also thank Leak Survey, Incorporated for the use of the helicopter this morning.”

Original Story: An attempted traffic stop Saturday morning on W. Commerce by Brownwood Police Officer Bruce Spruill led to a high speed chase across Brownwood and into Early, according to Brownwood Police Department.

At approximately 8:13 a.m., after observing several traffic violations, a traffic stop was initiated on a vehicle in the 1000 block of W. Commerce Street. According to Assistant Chief of Police James Fuller, the driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated, leading officers to several neighborhoods in the south part of Brownwood and eventually in to the City of Early.

The pursuit ended at about 8:27 a.m. when the driver of the fleeing vehicle took a dead-end road, CR 381, according to police. After running out of roadway, the driver of the fleeing vehicle crashed through several gates and a fence before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot, the report states.

The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Alonzo Flores, fled into a heavily wooded and overgrown area, according to police reports.

Fuller explained that Flores did speak with officers by phone several times but stated he did not want to go back to prison and was sorry he disappointed his family.

Brownwood PD units were assisted by Brown County Sheriff’s deputies, Early Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and by Leak Survey, Incorporated through the use of a helicopter during the search.

Attempts to locate Flores on foot and with the aid of the helicopter were unsuccessful at the time of the incident, the report states.  Flores attempted to dispose of numerous packages of drugs during the pursuit which were recovered by officers, along with additional paraphernalia located inside the vehicle abandoned by Flores, said Fuller.

Although Flores was not located and has not been arrested, Fuller stated that law enforcement will seek a warrant for his arrest.

“I am thankful that no one was injured and that the officers performed with the safety of the public in mind,” said Fuller.

Warrants being sought in the case include manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance over 4 grams, possession of marijuana, tampering with evidence and evading in a vehicle, according to Fuller.
