A Brownwood man in the 2400 block of Avenue I contacted authorities on Thursday morning after what was described as “a round of ammunition relatively large in size” was found outside a residence.

Brownwood Police Officer Sky Self arrived at the location where he was shown a round of ammo that was approximately 5 1/2 inches long and 2 1/2 wide.  The round was found inside a hollowed out tree stump at the residence.  The ammunition round looked to have been at that location for quite some time according to Officer Self’s police report.

The Fort Hood bomb squad was notified who arrived later in the day and removed the round from the residence.  It was later detonated safely at the National Guard Armory.

Reports indicated that the round is believed to be from a World War II Sherman tank.
