Afternoon Update:  Brownwood Police Lt. Tracey Delgado reported that the driver of the pickup, identified as Billy Chandler, 34, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, less than 1 gram.  Delgado said that the arresting officer’s report stated that Chandler said he “hit a slick spot in the roadway and lost control of the vehicle.”

Delgado reported that the extent of the injuries of the two passengers that were transported were not known as of Friday afternoon, but were thought to be non-incapacitating.  It appears the two may have been riding in the bed of the pickup, but Delgado could not confirm that information.

Another passenger of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident on foot.  An investigation is ongoing regarding fleeing the scene of an accident and possibly failure to stop and render aid, according to Delgado.

Original Story: Emergency responders were called to the 2700 block of Coggin Avenue Friday morning at 7 AM for a one-vehicle accident with injuries.

A Dodge Dakota pickup struck a utility pole in the block causing it to break and fall on top of the pickup.  Telephone lines were knocked down as a result of the collision and Verizon was called to the scene. The vehicle was traveling northeast on Coggin when the accident occurred.

Two people were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries.  No other information was available about the accident Friday morning.

Brownwood Police, Brownwood Fire Department and Guardian EMS all responded to the scene.
