Artist Mary Haan of Abilene received the honor of not only being named the People’s Choice for the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit, but also took the honor for the same at the Salon des Refusés as the awards were announced this final week of the exhibit.
Each year votes are taken from visitors to the exhibits, naming their favorite piece. Votes were taken daily through the first several days of the exhibit, collected and counted on Sunday, February 9th at closing and then and announced the final week of the exhibit.No prize money was awarded for the people’s choice; however winners were awarded rosettes of their honor. The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit names several winners for the People’s Choice Award while the Salon des Refusés names only one winner.
People’s Choice Award Winners were as follows:
Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit
1st place: Mary Haan of Abilene “Star Light, Star Bright” – oil painting (pictured at top)
1st runner-up: Robert Cook of Granbury – “Oak Point” – watercolor
2nd runner-up: Martha Middleton of Brownwood – “Unconditional Love” – oil
3rd runner-up: Colby Compton of Early – “Eye” – colored pencil and graphite
4th runner-up: Jana Herndon of Abilene – “Midnight Iris” – micro-mosaic
Salon des Refusés:

Demonstrations continued through Friday afternoon. Some of the last visitors to the demonstrations were three classes of kindergarteners from Woodland Heights Elementary. Martha and Ted Shelton of Brownwood showed the students how to paint wildflowers. Ginger Test of Novice demonstrated watercolors and Paige Shelton of Smithville demonstrated how to make pottery.
The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit will be open in its final day on Saturday, February 15th from 9:00-11:00 a.m. before artists begin picking up their artwork.
