Funeral services for Pauline Glass Hochhalter, 94 of Brownwood will be held at 2:00pm Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Union Presbyterian Church with Rev. Chuck Gartman and Rev. Mary D. DaLessio officiating. Burial will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Pauline passed away Friday, January 14, 2011 at Oak Ridge Manor in Brownwood.
Born February 20, 1916, in Brownwood, Pauline was the daughter of the late Modie M. and Ethel May White Glass. She graduated from Zephyr High School in 1934, and won a scholarship to Draughn’s Business College in Abilene. In 1935, Pauline began work at the Southwestern States Telephone Company in Brownwood, as a secretary of the General Plant Superintendent. On February 16, 1941, she was married in Washington, D.C. to A.R. Hochhalter of Wishek, N.D. (Manager of McLean Studio in Brownwood from 1935 to 1940). In February of 1991, they celebrated the 50th anniversary at the Zephyr Community Center in Zephyr, TX. A. R. passed away March 11th, 1991. In Washington, D.C., Pauline was employed by the U.S. Navy Department for eleven years and was transferred to the Boston Naval Shipyard where she worked for five and a half years. In 1962, the Hochhalters returned to Brownwood and were co-owners of the L&A Machinery Company, John Deere Dealership, in Early, TX, until their retirement, at which time they moved to Zephyr. In August of 1990 they moved to Tanglewood Gardens in Brownwood. After retirement, Pauline dedicated her time and talents to her church, Union Presbyterian, and charitable organizations. She was a member of the Mary Garland chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Society, and was a contributing member of the Brownwood Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Pauline also served as a Docent at the Brown County Museum of History. She was Treasurer for the Brown County Historical Society, Mary Garland chapter, National Society of the American Revolution, and Meals on Wheels for many years. Pauline was also a member of the Zephyr Community Improvement Club, FCE Club, and served on the Zephyr Cemetery Association Board of Directors for thirty-three years. She assisted in the research, typing, and publishing of three historical books about Zephyr; researched, compiled, and typed applications for two Texas Historical Markers: Zephyr Cemetery and Zephyr Presbyterian Church (now known as the Zephyr Community Center). In 1985, Pauline recorded data from the Zephyr Cemetery tombstones. She compiled, typed, and published the Zephyr Cemetery Survey Book, keeping it up to date through November 2005. Also in 1992, she assisted in the publishing history of the Austin Avenue Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three nieces; Carolyn Brandenburg and husband Stephen of Brownwood, Connie Gartman and husband Chuck of Lubbock, and Marsha Collins and husband Roger of San Angelo, her nephew Don Busch and wife Marie of Las Cruses, NM, eight grand-nieces and five grand-nephews, five great grand-nieces, and four great grand-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband A.R. Hochhalter, her parents, her sister Dorothy Williams, her brother John Glass, and nephew Gary Williams.
