Howard Payne University honored Brownwood native Bernice Porter Paul and HPU sophomore Carlee Ammons during the seventh annual HPU Woman’s Club Yellow Rose Scholarship Luncheon on Tuesday, April 5. Paul was the recipient of the HPU Yellow Rose Award and Ammons was awarded the Yellow Rose Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic school year.

The annual luncheon was held in the Bullion Suites of HPU’s Mabee University Center. Award-winning standup comic, television hostess and author Chonda Pierce was the guest speaker for the group of HPU faculty and staff and community women.

Paul is a graduate of HPU. She has served in numerous capacities in her church and the local community. She has been a charter member and president of Brownwood Hospital Auxiliary, and has served at the information desk of Brownwood Regional Medical Center. She has also served as a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Daughters of the American Revolution, Garden Culture Club and Modern Musicians. She has been a member of the Woman’s Club of Brownwood and a trustee for the Baptist Memorial Center in San Angelo. A longtime member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, she has devoted countless hours to teaching Sunday School lessons for all ages. She was named First Lady of Brown County by the Heart of Texas Girl Scout Council in 2004.

The Yellow Rose Award is presented each year to a woman in recognition of her exemplary leadership, Christian values and demonstrated support of Howard Payne University.

AmmonsYellowRoseScholarshipAmmons is a communications major from Richmond, Texas. She is a member of the honor society Gamma Beta Phi, and is currently this organization’s representative in HPU’s Student Government Association. She is also a member of Student Speaker Bureau, HPU’s nationally recognized speech and debate team. Ammons plays varsity tennis and varsity volleyball, and is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Additionally, she serves as a leader on the Baptist Student Ministry leadership team and was recently elected as Student Body President for 2011-2012.

The HPU Yellow Rose Scholarship is presented annually to a female sophomore at HPU who maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average, participates in extracurricular activities and exhibits leadership qualities representative of Christian values.
