The Yellow Jackets brought the lightning with four goals in four minutes in the second half to keep the Howard Payne University soccer team undefeated in a dominant 6-1 victory over the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers.
The game looked to be competitive with no goals through the first 37 minutes. That would change when a HPU corner kick would bounce out to the right corner of the box to Chris Martinez for a laser shot into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Howard Payne would double that lead on a free kick 10 yards off the box from Kevin Rule to the head of Reese Lawson at the back post in the 44th minute. At that point the momentum swung and would stay with HPU. The second half the game quickly got out of hand when the Jackets scored four goals in the first 9 minutes. Shane Cazad scored the first two goals within 26 seconds of each other in the 50th and 51st minute, taking the lead to 4-0. Cazad set an ASC record for fastest consecutive goals. Cameron Jannati assisted in one of the goals.
Luis Tamez and Shaun Stratton grabbed the final two goals just two and three minutes after Cazad’s pair.
HPU would not complete the shutout though as Wayland would head in a goal in the 74th minute and make the game 6-1.
The weather would then intervene with lightning and cut the game short at the 81st minute. Both teams decided to end the game at that point.
HPU would finish with 11 shots on goal to WBU’s 3. Corners were 11-2 HPU.
Keeper Kyle Huesing had a quiet day only having to make 1 save. Back-up Ryan Young came in for the final 10 minutes and had 1 save as well as allowing the only goal.
HPU’s record moves to 2-0-1 on the year, while Wayland goes to 2-1-0.
The next game kicks off American Southwest Conference play as HPU takes on East Texas Baptist University at 4:00pm Friday, Sept. 17 on the road in Marshall, Texas.
It was a overtime thriller as the Howard Payne University Lady Jacket soccer team beat out Wayland Baptist 3-2 on a Leslie Jones golden goal in the 96 minute.
The HPU women had a 2-0 lead entering the half. The goals came from Melinda Dickens at the 29th minute and Rebecca Lamar in the 37th minute. Assists were from Kelci Thomas and Jamie Tish.
The lead dwindled quick as Wayland Baptist answered back with two quick goals midway through the second half. Both came within 11 minutes of each other, in the 54th and 65th minutes, tying the game at 2-2 to force overtime.
With the golden goal rule in place, whoever scored first, won. Leslie Jones of HPU would take the honors with an assist from Jordyn Stephens in the box just 6 minutes into the overtime. She would finish with a goal into the top right corner of the goal to nab the first win of the year for the Lady Jackets.
HPU had 6 corners to Wayland’s none. HPU also won the shots on goal battle, 10-8.
Allison Harp started at goal for the Lady Jackets and had 4 saves before leaving the game in the 81 minute. Adrienne Walker would step in after that and get 2 saves of her own playing the final 16 minutes of the game.
The Lady Jackets are now 1-1-1 on the season, while Wayland Baptist sits at 1-2-0.
