Brownwood Lion baseball player Seth Owen signed a letter of intent with Angelo State University on Wednesday afternoon.
Owen plans to play baseball and major in education to teach math. His skills playing ball have earned him a partial scholarship that will pay a good portion of his tuition.
Proud parents Scott and Kristi Owen stated that they are excited that Seth signed with Angelo State, as it gives him the opportunity to play at the next level, but it also continues a family tradition as his maternal grandparents, Bob and Libby Ellis both attended Angelo State University.
“It’s something that you think back when he was about 10-11 playing and about where he is now and realize that all that hard work has paid off,” said Scott Owen. “It’s really something to know that someone has recognized his ability and is giving him the opportunity to go to the next level. Lots of people in the community helped make it happen; it’s a pretty neat deal.”
Seth stated that he had looked at other schools such as Corpus Christi A&M, and Cisco Jr. College, but that he is excited to attend Angelo State.
“Since my grandparents went there, basically it feels like home,” he stated.
Brownwood High School head coach and athletic director Chuck Howard stated that Owen’s hard work and dedication had paid off and that he has made Brownwood High School very proud.
“I want to congratulate you that this hard work has paid off, you have made Brownwood High School very proud,” said Howard.
Early High School Coach Blake Sandford, who coached Owen last year, echoed the sentiment about hard work paying off and congratulated Owen stating, “A lot of good players come through Brownwood and certainly Seth needs to be in that class. It just goes to show that hard work will pay off. He has worked very, very hard and I continue to be amazed at what he has been doing, the effort that he has put forth, and hopefully this will lead to the big leagues.”
His current coach Jay Clark also commended Owen, “We are so proud of Seth and the good things he has done here at Brownwood High School. He is a great leader, has put out a great effort and attitude every day. We are so blessed to have him as a part of our baseball club.”
Seth gave thanks to those in attendance, “I want to thank all of my coaches over the past four years and my friends and family who came out to support me in this decision.”
