One man was hospitalized with injuries as a result of being involved in a pair of motorcycle accidents Thursday night where drinking and driving was involved, according to Brownwood Police.

At approximately 6:45 PM Thursday, the first accident occurred where two motorcycles collided at the entryway of Commerce Square.  According to witnesses on scene, one of the drivers left the scene at a high rate of speed, heading toward W. Austin Avenue.    The other driver, 32-year-old Edgar Lee Mullins, stayed at the accident scene and was found to be driving while intoxicated, according to the police report.  A witness stated that a beer can was visible at the scene, the report states.

Mullins told police that that he was driving his motorcycle after drinking to follow his friend home when they collided, the report states.  The officer advised Mullins that a witness had observed him driving around in circles after the crash, and that he fell off of his motorcycle and couldn’t stay on, according to the report.  Mullins stated that he had not fallen off, but said that his motorcycle was not working properly after the crash.  After failing field sobriety tests, Mullins was transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center and then subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated, the report states.

The driver who had left the scene, identified as 27-year-old Brook Raymond Bindel, was involved in a second accident in the southbound lanes in the 1300 block of Austin Avenue in front of CVS Pharmacy at approximately 6:56 PM.  According to witnesses on scene, Bindel had traveled over the Bill Monroe overpass at speeds near 70 mph and then crashed into an Acura sedan as it pulled onto Austin Avenue from the CVS parking lot.  One witness stated that Bindel drove between two cars before crashing into the passenger car.

At the scene of this second accident, there were also beer cans scattered around the wrecked motorcycle.

Bindel was noted to be “flat on his back in the roadway and had blood coming from his ears, eyes, nose, and mouth and it was apparent he had not been wearing a helmet. He also had lacerations covering every part of his body that was exposed. He had regained consciousness but was not speaking coherently,” according to the report.  Bindel was transported to BRMC for treatment.  Bindel’s medical status was unavailable as of Friday morning.

The 22-year-old female driver of the passenger car and her 3-year-old son were shaken but uninjured.  The vehicle sustained heavy damage to the rear passenger side as a result of the collision.

According to Brownwood Police, a warrant for Bindel is being sought for fleeing the scene of an accident and consideration of a DWI warrant pending results of blood analysis.
