PinonReneTorresUPDATE 3:00pm: Early Chief of Police David Mercer released the name of the murder suspect as 32-year-old Rene Torres Pinon of Stephenville.

According to Mercer, investigation shows that Pinon was at Early Donuts when Eddie Lopez came in to buy donuts.  As Lopez got into his car, Pinon approached and the two began to argue and then Pinon shot Lopez, said Mercer who stated that the murder weapon was a .40 caliber handgun.

Mercer said that police received information that Lopez owed money to Pinon’s girlfriend who is also an employee of Lopez.  Mercer said that Pinon was an employee at Kohler in Brownwood.

Pinon came to the Brownwood Law Enforcement Center at 10:50am and turned himself in, confessing to the murder of Lopez, according to authorities.

12:00pm: Early Police Chief David Mercer confirmed the name of the victim of the Monday morning shooting was Eddie Lopez, owner of Tequila Nights Club and Eddie’s Autobody Repair in Brownwood.

According to Mercer, the suspect is being interviewed and has not been formally charged; therefore his name cannot be released.

“We are told that it’s over money, but we haven’t been able to confirm this yet,” stated Mercer.

Mercer also confirmed that there were customers at the business when the murder occurred.

“We’re told the suspect went up to the car and fired shots at Lopez while he was sitting in his car,” said Mercer who stated that these shots never exited Lopez’s vehicle.

Original Report: Law enforcement agencies are investigating a murder of a man at a donut shop in Early Monday morning.

Initial reports indicate that the male victim was shot and killed while he was sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of the business around 9:45am Monday.  Initial reports also said that five shots were fired.  Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.

Law enforcement officials state that a male suspect turned himself into authorities at the Law Enforcement Center about an hour later and confessed to the shooting.  Officers are booking him into Brown County Jail.  Names of the victim and suspect have not been released.
