Graveside services for Olene Hightower, age 87, of Brownwood, Texas will be held 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 26, 2012 at the Blanket Cemetery under the direction of the Heartland Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. She passed away Monday, July 23, 2012 in a local nursing home.
Olene was born May 28, 1925 in Brown County near Blanket, Texas- the 10th of 12 children of William R Hightower and Nellie (Morgan) Hightower. After graduation from Early High School she began her career with the telephone company in Brownwood. She worked 43 years and 9 months with SW States, GTE and Verizon telephone companies.
Preceding her in death were her parents and brothers, Nealie, Harry, Henry and Silas Hightower; sisters Bertie Hinson, Grace Leach, Christine Evans, Evelyn Abernathy, 1 infant brother and 1 infant sister.
Survivors include one sister Marie Love of Marble Falls; nieces Ida Nell DeViney, Linda Smith, Darlene Causey; nephews Doyle Hightower, Jerry Hightower, William Clayton Hightower, Lyndon Hightower and other nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her special long time friends, Lucille Kirkland and Lucille Cumba.Olene was a member of St. Johns Church of Brownwood and for many years was a faithful and active member of the church. She enjoyed traveling with her friends, baking, especially cakes and pies, working crossword puzzles, reading and going out to eat.
