Brownwood Police officer Robert Lee was on patrol when he witnessed a hit and run accident in the 500 block of Carnegie at 7:50pm Saturday. According to the report, the at-fault vehicle immediately sped away from the scene and was stopped by the officer in the 700 block of Avenue A.
According to the report, the Dodge Intrepid was driving west in the 400 block of Carnegie, in the inside lane, when it was hit by the suspect vehicle. The Chevrolet Lumina was reported to have disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of E. Chandler and Carnegie Street when it struck the Intrepid and then fled the scene, the report states.
One of the four occupants of the Intrepid suffered non-incapacitating injuries and was transported to the Brownwood Regional Medical Center emergency room by Guardian EMS. Both occupants of the suspect vehicle suffered minor injuries and were transported to the Brown County Jail.
Officers found a small quantity of illegal substances during the stop of the suspect vehicle. The driver of the suspect vehicle, 24-year-old Melvin Gil Batista, was arrested for fleeing the scene of an accident and possession of a controlled substance penalty group 2A less than 2 ounces and for possession of a firearm by a felon. The female passenger, identified as 22-year-old Gregoria Garcia-Batista, was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance penalty group 2A less than 2 ounces and public intoxication. Melvin Bautista was released on bonds totaling $24,500 and Gregoria Garcia-Batista was released on bonds of $2000 Saturday night.
