bencox2I have eaten a lot of pizza in my life. A LOT of pizza. I used to run a location of one of the “Big Boys’ pizza chains in the D/FW area. And yes, to answer your next question, I do still like it!

I shared a pizza with my daughter, my girlfriend, and her son the other day, and it got me thinking. How much of our lives as Americans revolve around this circular food?

If you’re going to be working late, if you’ve got major studying to do, or if you’re having a party, you order pizza. It’s easy to eat, (usually) it tastes great, (even if it’s not a good pizza, it’s still better than NO pizza!) and it can spark creativity. (This column is evidence of that!)

It’s also a metaphor for life. There are all kinds of people in this world. Some of us are a little doughy, some a little tough. Some are spicy, others sweet. And yes, some of us are rather cheesy, while others are strictly no cheese. (My little brother used to have to eat pizza w/o cheese due to allergy. He outgrew it, thankfully!)

There are very few situations where pizza wouldn’t be acceptable. Meetings of heads of state spring to mind, but what would it be like to have the worlds leaders hunkered over an extra large deep-dish with extra cheese and a couple bottles of a frosty beverage? I have to imagine that they’d get a lot done.

Sure there are occasions where burgers and hot dogs are more appropriate, a ball game for example. Or steaks, they are great “cook the girlfriend a great meal to show how manly you are” food. But, can’t you impress the ladyfriend with a handmade crust and homemade sauce? I think so.

My daughter has a short list of foods she likes. She gets it honestly, her father is the same way. But pizza is at the top of the list, and doesn’t seem to be falling from grace anytime soon.

You can pay people who are helping you move with pizza and beer. What other food serves as currency in this modern age?!?

I love pizza. Obviously.

(This column was not sponsored by any pizzeria, but I would gladly accept “thank you’s” in the form of giftcards!!)
