An observant sergeant of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office noticed a suspicious vehicle and trailer loaded with scrap metal which led to a traffic stop resulting in the arrest of two for manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance on Thursday afternoon, July 28th.
The Toyota pickup, hauling scrap metal, caught the eye of Sgt. Lana Guthrie as she was conversing with a landowner in the area of Hwy 183 and County Road 270, according to the arrest report. As Guthrie finished her conversation with the landowner, she pulled onto the highway she noted several vehicles behind the pickup due to the slow speed of the pickup. The report states that the vehicle was going very slowly, 50 in a 70mph speed zone, for several miles and Guthrie eventually caught up with it.
Shortly after 2:00pm, a traffic stop was initiated at the intersection of W. Commerce and Belle Plain due to the trailer not having working lights, the report states.
The driver was observed leaning forward in the cab of the truck and then reaching down toward the back seat of the vehicle, according to Guthrie. According to the report, the passenger’s movements were unable to be seen due to the load on the trailer and the position of Guthrie’s vehicle. As Guthrie explained the reason for the stop, she asked the driver for his license, to which he admitted he had a suspended driver’s license and could not locate insurance for the vehicle, according to the report. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Zebulon Eli Vanhorn of Mullin, was arrested for Driving While License Invalid.
The passenger, identified as 20-year-old Tiffany Jo Holland of Mullin, was asked to exit the vehicle. As she got out of the pickup, she became hysterical and began to cry, according to Sgt. Guthrie. When asked if there was anything illegal in the pickup, Holland stated that she “did not know what he (Vanhorn) had,” the report states. She further stated that Vanhorn had placed a pink camouflage skull bag into the back seat of the vehicle. During an inventory of the vehicle, the bag was located and found to contain a clear bag which held a white crystal substance, later field tested positive for methamphetamine, according to Guthrie. A quantity of cash, which was secured with rubber bands, was also located along with other items used in the illegal use of narcotics, the report states.
The methamphetamine weighted approximately 47grams with packaging, according to BCSO officials.
According to Guthrie, Holland admitted to using methamphetamine out of the pink bag approximately 2 hours before the traffic stop. Vanhorn and Holland were each arrested for Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Grade 1 greater than 4g less than 200g.
