Several reports were giving during the Tuesday morning Brownwood City Council meeting. One of particular interest was the progress of the Police Chief search.
City Manager Bobby Rountree reported that there are now 21 applicants from across the state who have applied for the position. February 5th is the deadline for applications to be submitted. On February 18th, the council will meet with the Police Officers Association who will rank the applicants. A committee will then be formed on March 14th which will then meet on March 16th to review the applications and narrow the field to about 5 prospects. Rountree said that the goal is to hire a Chief to begin work in early May.
-The Parks Project was reported to be progressing well. The Coliseum Annex remodeling is on schedule. A sample of one of the lifeguard chairs that will be used at the new Family Aqautic Center was present for viewing. It was reported that concrete framers are working on the pool. A selection of colors to be used for the pool has also been chosen and will be bright vibrant colors. February 19th, the National Guard will return to do more work on the project.
-Another item of interest was the financial report. Finance Director Walter Middleton gave this report which indicated a decrease in revenues due to lower consumption of water and sales tax revenues being down.
-City Elections were scheduled for May 8th, 2010 for the positions of Mayor and two council seats of ward 1 and ward 4.
-Mayor Bert Massey read a proclamation recognizing Dr. Joe B. Rushing and Joe W.G. Behlau, as distinguished Texans.
-FEMA floodplain remapping was discussed and it was noted that accurate markers have been found which indicate that measurements have been off as much as one foot. It is hoped that “hard data and historical information rather than theory will be considered” as stated by Mayor Massey.
-The council took a brief break before going into closed session, consultation with attorney regarding Whitley vs. City of Brownwood, et al and then adjourned. No action was taken as a result of the closed session.
The next City Council meeting will be Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
