Grab the gloves and roll up your sleeves this Saturday for the first work day on the new Brownwood Area Community Garden located behind Central Texas Opportunities.

Mary Engle, garden coordinator, said work will begin at 10 a.m. to trench and lay pipe for the 2200 square foot garden’s drip irrigation system.  Engle said the work day will begin at 10 a.m. at the site of the garden located behind the Central Texas Opportunities building at 1500 Dublin Street. Refreshments will be served.

In addition to the work day, the Brownwood area community garden, a non-profit organization, will pick up leaves from residents in the Brownwood and Early area to be used as mulch for the soil.  Engle said if any residents who live outside of Brownwood wanted to donate their leaves, they could give her a call when they came into town and she would pick them up.  Or they could leave them at the garden site behind Central Texas Opportunities  on Dublin Street.

To call for pickup, to volunteer or for more information about the Community Garden, call Engle at 784-8453.

The Brownwood Area Community Garden will give the community an opportunity to help grow organic produce without chemicals to be donated to local food pantries.  In addition to providing for a need in the community, the garden will also serve as an educational center to learn about organic gardening, providing horticultural activities for scout, church, school groups and more.
