Written by Ben Cox – A new chapter of the national Jaycees organization has begun, focusing on Brown County, not only the town of Brownwood.

Started by Charity Adams, Jennifer Spencer and Travis Curry, the Heart of Texas chapter places its aim at the smaller things after seeing that kind of focus in other chapters after a state meeting.

Curry says they began after “we saw other chapters were doing more humanitarian type of stuff, smaller events and more things for their community, and we wanted to do things like that.”

Curry says this chapter is designed to be all inclusive, which is why they have branched out to include the entirety of Brown County. “We don’t care what color you are, what religion you are, any of that kind of that of stuff.”

He continues “There are people who have been to prison, or they’ve been this or that, or they have tattoos and people look down on them, but they still have a giving heart. So that way those people can feel like they can be a part of something and give back to their community.”

Adams says one of the new groups activities planned for the month of December is a fundraiser this Thursday to cover funeral expenses for a local family who recently lost a small child. “We’ve partnered with Chipsters Grill, and what we thought would be a small benefit looks like it will turn out to be pretty huge for this family. I even spoke to the Mayor and city officials about helping serve and help us stand strong as a community.”

Curry says this chapter is not trying to take anything away from the Brownwood Chapter of Jaycees, but instead, “we support them and they support us. It’s like a big family, all the Texas chapters support each other.”

The Jaycee’s is a leadership training and civic organization for people between the ages of 18 and 40. It specializes in  business developmentmanagement skills, individual training, community service, and international connections.

Notable past members of the group include former US Pesidents Clinton, Ford, Reagan and Nixon, Vice Presidents Al Gore, and Hubert Humphrey, and other celebrities like Charles Lindbergh and Bill Gates.
