Nelson Turnbow, age 91, of Brownwood departed this life on Thursday, February 28, 2013, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at the First Baptist Church of Brownwood with Dr. Rick Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home, 800 Center Ave., Brownwood. Nelson was born on November 11, 1921, in Asher, Oklahoma to Daniel and Ollie Turnbow. He graduated from High School in Ryan, Oklahoma and was a graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State University and the University of North Texas. Nelson proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Marine Corps and fought in Guam and on Iwo Jima. Nelson met Mildred K. Wallace while he was stationed in San Diego, California after the war, and they were married on July 4th, 1947 in Denver, Colorado.
Nelson always gave God all the credit for any success that he had in his life. He loved God, his family, and his country. Nelson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brownwood for many years and served the church as a deacon. He loved his Lord and his fellow man. Nelson coached in Lano, Texas and also in Brownwood. He was a teacher for many years with the Brownwood ISD. Nelson was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and good friend to many. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Nelson is survived by his daughter, Kathy Martin, and husband, Bruce, of Arlington, Texas; granddaughter, Melisa Owens; great nephew Eddie Turnbow and wife Shelia, and several great grandchildren. Condolences for the family may be left at www.davismorrisfuneralhome.com.
