9:15 PM Update – Firefighters were still on scene putting out hot spots at the house fire on the corner of 7th Street and Avenue K as of 9:15 PM Monday night.

Fire Marshal Buddy Preston told Brownwood News that one man and three young kids were at the home when the fire started.  All escaped without injury.

Preston said that he has not been able to determine the cause of the fire, but the man reported that he saw smoke in the house as he came out of another room.

Preston reports that the home was a total loss and the family lost everything.

The mother of the kids, who was at the store when the fire broke out, said that donation items can be left at a relative’s home at 1611 2nd Street in Brownwood.

The children include 5 and 2-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy.   The local chapter of the Red Cross is helping the family with immediate needs.

Original Story: Multiple fire units were called to the scene of a structure fire at residence on the corner of 7th Street and Avenue K Monday night, where they arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames.

Brownwood Fire Department and Police arrived on scene at approximately 6:40 p.m. and later called for help from Early Volunteer Fire Department as well as several off duty BFD firefighters.

All residents of the home were found to be outside of the house when firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported.  It was reported that the fire started at the back of the house and quickly spread.  The occupants were quickly given shelter in a Brownwood Police Department patrol unit due to the night air having a temperature of 25° at the time of the fire.

Oncor and Atmos Energy were also called to the scene to shut off utilities to the residence.

The home appeared to be a total loss suffering fire throughout the structure and roof collapse.

A huge plume of smoke could be seen for several blocks.

Brownwood Fire Marshal Buddy Preston is investigating the fire, but no information was available from the scene Monday night.   Pictured above and below are scenes as firemen battled the flames.  Photos by Ray Tipton.
