The 2015-16 Brownwood Middle School Advanced Art class collaborated with Brownwood property owner Don Morelock to paint an 8′ x 8′ mural for installation on the outside of his building located at Fisk Avenue and E. Lee Street in downtown Brownwood.
The class worked eleven weeks on the project that included brainstorming ideas for the theme and sketching different images to use, sanding and priming the boards provided by Mr. Morelock, transferring the images to the boards, and then painting and sealing them. As the work progressed, the images came to life and other students in the school had the chance to see the mural come together as well. Toward the end of the school year there were many visitors to the art classroom to check on the progress.
“It was an exciting project on many levels,” said art teacher, Julie Mize. “I had the chance to see my class work in partnership with each other to create a unified piece. The students had the opportunity to learn to work for a client.”
The mural’s theme represents various aspects of Brownwood: history (1080 train engine, Depot, and the wagon wheel), education (Howard Payne University), outdoor attractions and scenery (hunting and Lake Brownwood State Park), and entertainment (athletics, carnivals, and events at Brownwood Coliseum).
The students involved were Ariawna Burt, Alexis Fuentes, Brianna Mobley, Angel Rivera, Ashlyn Shelton, and Miranda Torres (pictured above with their teacher Mrs. Mize). Carson Cloy and Graham Sharpe, recent graduates of Brownwood High School, helped Mr. Morelock install the mural.
“This was my first time to lead a group in creating such a large artwork, and we were so pleased with the final result,” stated Mize. “We are very excited to bring our artwork to a public place in Brownwood.”
