Today Howard Payne University head women’s basketball coach Meia Daniels announced the hiring of Mercedes Corona as assistant basketball coach.
Mercedes Corona, a fall 2012 graduate of Schreiner University, will serve as the new assistant coach for the Howard Payne University women’s basketball program.
“I am excited for Mercedes to join our Howard Payne family,” said HPU head coach Meia Daniels. “She has a big passion for basketball and with her on board now I’m really excited to get this season started.”
Mercedes played three seasons at Schreiner University and graduated early, not playing her final season of eligibility. She worked the past season as the recruiting/film coordinator intern for the women’s basketball team under then Schreiner head coach Matt Wallis.
“I want to say thank you to Howard Payne University and Coach Daniels for the opportunity to work with the women’s basketball team,” said Mercedes Corona. “I know the tradition Howard Payne women’s basketball has and I am more than ready to live up to expectations.”
This past season, Mercedes also worked with the Schreiner sports information department keeping stats and event staff helping with game day operations.
A 2009 graduate of Granger high school, there she was named All-Region and District Offensive MVP. Since high school, she has been involved with many community events including working basketball camps, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and serving as a YMCA youth basketball coach.
