Fundraising efforts are underway to help revitalize Cecil Holman Park in Brownwood and memorial walkway bricks are now available. Members of Revitalizing Our Community (ROC) are selling memorial bricks honoring donors, their family members, or special groups. These bricks, recently donated by the City of Brownwood, will be used to construct a walkway through the park.
The cost of each brick is $75 and allows donors to order an engraving on their brick. Larger granite bricks are also available for $200. Pictured above, Brownwood City Councilman and ROC member Draco Miller, during Tuesday’s city council meeting, shows off a brick dedicated to the memory of Ernest “Ernie” Delgado, a Navy Veteran who recently lost his battle with cancer.
Miller stated that the group hopes to raise approximately $300,000 and has a good start to that goal with a $100,000 donation from the City of Brownwood and over $30,000 raised from donations from local businesses and individuals. To date about 100 of the 200 bricks have already been sold.
The group plans to purchase a playscape similar to that at Coggin Park, with separate play areas for toddlers and older children. The playscape will have a bright multicolored scheme, so that people driving by will be able to more easily see the park and its improvements. There will also be the Walt Williams putting green, the memorial walkway and landscaping of the park. There will also be additional parking constructed according to Miller. It is hoped that enough funds can be raised to also construct a splash pad in the next 18 months.
A fundraiser is planned for Saturday, October 1st from 12-5 pm. During this time, ROC members will have information to share with the public about the revitalization plans, showing areas where projects are planned and they will be accepting donations at this time.
“Any donation is acceptable, we appreciate whatever people give,” said Miller. “We love the kind that jingles but we most like the ones that fold.”
