At the beginning of August and with the 10th Annual Brownwood Reunion Celebration coming up, Mayor Stephen Haynes put forth a “fitness challenge” to city departments to participate in the Reunion’s annual running event and that challenge was answered. The City Administrative staff answered the call and had the most participants in the Reunion running event, winning the fitness challenge. In fact, they were the only group of city employees to have a three person team in the 10K event.
Accepting the Mayor Haynes’ Fitness Challenge Award was Melanie Larose, city accountant. The trophy was custom made with a city employee’s worn out running shoe; die cast vehicles representing police, fire, and even a tractor with a front end loader; a water bill; a calculator; and two pieces of scrap timber from the city streets barn.
The mayor asked the city administrative staff, police department, and fire department to form teams and compete against each other during the event. Several departments answered the call, with some walking the 1.5 mile course, up to those who took a harder challenge of running in the 5K and 10K races.
This Reunion event usually consists of a 5k run and 1.5 mile walk, but organizers have added the 10k run to commemorate the 10th year of the Reunion.
