comptrollerlogoTexas Comptroller Susan Combs released sales tax allocation numbers for May which showed Brown County continuing a positive trend in year-to-date numbers of about 5% for the county as a whole over May of last year; however municipalities showed a slight decline with the exception of Brownwood which showed a 0.40% increase for the month as compared to May 2011.

Early, Bangs and Blanket showed slight decreases; however these cities are still continuing their positive year-to-date numbers independently.

“Sales tax revenue has now increased for 25 consecutive months. Recent strength in sales tax collections continued in both business and consumer spending categories,” Combs said.  “Growth was led by the oil and natural gas-related sectors, while significant gains also came from retail trade and restaurants.”

Combs will send May local sales tax allocations totaling $633 million to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts, up 5.5 percent compared to May 2011.

The sales tax figures represent monthly sales made in March as well as January, February and March sales by businesses that report tax quarterly.
