Funeral services for Maxine Smith Hine, age 80, of Early, will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 19, 2017 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Eddie Aishie officiating.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.  Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hine died Monday, August 14, 2017.

Maxine Smith Hine was born April 27, 1937 in Bertram to Albert and Ruby Smith.  The family moved to Brown County in 1938.

Maxine graduated from Early High School in 1955.  She participated in all sports at Early High School.

She graduated from Howard Payne University with a BS degree in Health and Physical Education and English in 1959.  In 1967 she received her Master’s Degree in Education and English.

Maxine taught Physical Education for 40 years.  Her teaching career included Mertzon, Columbus, Georgia, Early Independent School District, Howard Payne University (18 years), Bowie Elementary in Richmond/Rosenberg, Texas and retired from South Elementary in Brownwood in 2000.

Maxine married the love of her life George W. Hine, Jr. on August 12, 1966 and for the next 38 years they would travel to the 341st US Army Engineers yearly convention held all over the U.S.  These were great trips for George and Maxine.

Maxine enjoyed her church activities, having accepted Christ during a summer outdoor revival in 1951.

Her greatest enjoyment came from jogging and walking her neighborhood, gardening, cooking, fishing and reading.  Maxine was a friend to any animal.

George and Maxine took great pride in landscaping and maintaining their large yard during the year.  She enjoyed planning the Cruise Group get-togethers and the birthday and 42 events.

She was a member of DKG for 25 years, Brown County Retired Teachers, and the American Association of Health and Physical Education during her teaching career.

Maxine always beamed with delight and pride when students would come up to her and say “you were my phys. ed teacher!”

Maxine is survived by her brother, William A. “Bill” Smith of Early; a special nephew, William James Smith of Pearland, a special great-niece, Caroline Tran Smith of Houston, a step-son, Kevin Smith Hine and wife Trisha of Vienna, VA, a grandson Brian Hine of Vienna, VA, a granddaughter, Heather Hine Caldwell and husband Chris of Superior, CO; a very special childhood friend, Bea Pruitt of Burleson; a special friend, Mary Schneider of Richmond, sister –in-law, Margie Hine of Amarillo, nephew, Ben Herb and wife Susan of Abilene, niece, Teri Matthews of Austin, niece, Pam Bellar and husband Jerry of Sudan, an uncle, Charles Smith and wife Johnie of Arlington, an aunt, Edith Smith Hoover of Wichita, Kansas and many cousins and friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Ruby Smith, husband, George Hine in 2010, her youngest brother, Jimmy Smith, her sister-in-law, Charolette Blair Smith in 2008, sister-in-law, Maxine Hine Herb and brother-in-law, Jimmy Hine.

The family requests memorials be made to a charity of one’s choice.
