Brownwood News – An eyewitness of a truck vs. train accident said he shouted “Jesus!” as he watched a white Chevy pick-up truck collide with an oncoming train under the 377 overpass in Brownwood around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Miraculously, the driver of the truck was able to walk away from the wreckage without any apparent injuries.
The eyewitness told reporters at the scene he later spoke to the man after the wreck, telling him to “Praise God that you walked away from that.” The accident occurred at an intersection under the overpass near Main Street and Coleman/Carnegie Streets.
Brownwood Police as well as Texas State Troopers were on scene along with the Brownwood Fire Department.
Preliminary evidence suggests the driver of the Chevy pick-up truck, identified as 81-year-old Utah Baldwin, may have attempted to drive around the railroad barrier as it was lowering. Unfortunately, the vehicle was struck by the front engine of the oncoming train. An eyewitness reported seeing the truck airborne and spinning several times.
“I was worried that truck was going to get pulled under the train,” he said.
The driver of the vehicle was alert, and speaking with officers after the accident. No EMS services were reported to be needed.
