A single gunshot ended the life of a Bangs resident as police were attempting to serve a warrant mid-morning Thursday.  An ambulance was called to the scene at Miller and Palmer Streets in Bangs following the report that stated, “A man has shot himself and is down.  Police are on scene.”

Brown County Sheriff’s detectives and investigators rushed to the scene to assist Bangs Chief of Police Butch Lawson as his call for backup was issued.

Bangs City manager Leo Smith issued the following statement regarding a short standoff that resulted in a fatality midmorning Thursday.

“At approximately 11:00am this morning, Bangs police were attempting to serve a felony warrant issued from Mills County on Bangs resident Kevin Gober.  When the officer attempted to serve the warrant, Mr. Gober pointed a gun at the officer.  Bangs Police officer tried to negotiate with Mr. Gober to put the gun down.  During the talks, Mr. Gober turned the gun on himself, firing one fatal shot to the head.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The officer was not injured.  Texas Rangers are now in charge of this incident.”

The crime for which the warrant was issued had not been released at the time of the statement.  An investigation by the Texas Rangers is ongoing.
