A Brownwood man was arrested on a warrant Monday night in connection with a smash-and-grab burglary of convenience store in Early over the weekend.
Early Police Chief David Mercer reports that the Early Police Department investigated the burglary of the Food Mart Shell Station in the 300 block of Early Blvd on Saturday, November 3rd at approximately 5:00am where an individual used a large rock to break out the front door glass and gained entry to the building. Once inside, the suspect took several cases of beer from inside and fled to the rear of the building.
The burglary was discovered by a newspaper delivery man after it had occurred Saturday morning. The alarm system sounded a short time earlier; however the alarm displayed the wrong business information and officers were initially sent to the wrong location, said Mercer.
Mercer stated that the video surveillance system was checked and evidence was gathered from the scene for the investigation.
At approximately 8:00pm on the same day, Corporal Brandon McMillian of the Early PD stopped a pedestrian walking on Parkway Drive in Early, said Mercer. The pedestrian matched the description of the suspect on the video from the surveillance camera in the Food Mart, but because of poor video quality, a positive identification was not possible at the time according to Mercer. The individual was indentified and released due to lack of evidence to hold him at the time.
Officers and Detectives continued to follow up on the case through the weekend and on Monday, November 5th; Early PD Detective Mike McCoy obtained an arrest warrant and search warrant for the suspect William Jeffrey Carlisle.
Mercer explained that while EPD officers were attempting to locate Carlisle, Brownwood PD officers were answering a call regarding a suspicious person call in the 500 block of West Commerce on Monday.
Brownwood Police Cpl. Stephanie Morgan arrived to find a male subject sitting on the ground behind the building, according to police. The male was determined to be intoxicated and resisted arrest as Morgan was placing him into the patrol unit, said BPD Lt. Tracy Delgado. The male had also given Morgan a false name, and upon further investigation, the male was determined to be 48-year-old William Carlisle, said Delgado. Dispatch informed the officer of a warrant for his arrest from EPD involving the weekend burglary of the Food Mart.
Brownwood PD arrested Carlisle on charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest and failure to identify, enhanced due to his failure to identify as a fugitive, said Delgado. EPD officers then served the arrest warrant for burglary of a building on Carlisle, according to Mercer. Carlisle continued to be combative with jail staff when he arrived, according to Delgado.
Mercer stated that a search warrant will be served on Carlisle later today to obtain DNA evidence for comparison to blood found at the scene of the burglary.
