BeautifulBeulah

The Brownwood Lyric Theatre is set to open their first live production of 2015 on Thursday, March 19th and recently released the cast list for their upcoming melodrama, “Beautiful Beulah Belle.”

The show is directed by Larry Mathis and promises to be a “knee slapping funny show.”  Mathis states that the production is a truly interactive experience and that the audience is encouraged to “boo and hiss” at the villain and applaud the heroine and is often prompted by signs throughout the show.

“This is truly an interactive experience and we want you to enjoy being a part of it. I assure you, the cast is ready and eager for your interaction,” Mathis stated.  “Oh, and by the way, laughing out loud is not only encouraged, but a must. The more you laugh, the more fun you’ll have. And, the actors will really respond as well.”

Mathis along with the cast and crew of “Beautiful Beulah Belle” are proud to present the first “good ole fashioned melodrama” the Lyric has produced, and they hope it’s not their last.  He stated that as director, he has taken the liberty to create some uniquely special fun.   The directions for the actors are literally performed out loud and there is use of old silent movie staples such as signs and piano music, “all the ingredients needed to have a frolicking good time,” according to Mathis.

“This has been a really fun show to rehearse with a great group of actors,” said Mathis.  “I believe the audience will truly enjoy the experience of a melodrama.   Expect to laugh a lot and enjoy the fun.”

Mathis further explained that the format of a melodrama is quite different from the usual production at the Lyric.

“Beautiful Beulah Belle” is a relatively short production, less than an hour, according to Mathis who stated, “The actors are genuinely having a fabulous time on stage.  I’ve encouraged the actors to not be afraid to try anything and everything. We’ve had fun ‘stretching the envelope’ a little.”

A synopsis of the production was offered.  “Beautiful Beulah Belle returns home on a bitter winter’s night from one of her habitual errands of mercy to find that the dastardly Lucifer Lowdown demands her hand in marriage if the old homestead is to be saved as a refuge for her family of four more-or-less hopeless females. The combined efforts of sentimental (but wise) Granny and the adenoidal hero, Adonis Adrenalin, save the day — at the last possible moment, of course. The villainous Lucifer is pursued by the man hungry Auntie Anna and the ultra-eager Ulalee Bloomersnap.”

The Lyric will offer 5 shows for this production opening on March 19th.  Shows will begin at 7:30 PM on March 19, 20 and 21st and at 2:30 PM on March 21st and 22nd.  Tickets cost $12 for adults and $8 for students.   All shows will take place at the Lyric Theatre in Downtown Brownwood.
