Those traveling through downtown Brownwood will notice that some changes are underway at the Lyric Theatre on Center Avenue.
Nancy Jo Humfield, artistic director and co-founder of the Lyric Performing Arts Company, the organization that owns the building, says that renovation to the exterior and lobby area of the building is underway. The work is expected to take 3-4 months to complete and is a part of a $1,500,000 complete restoration of the building, which originally opened in Brownwood in 1914.
Humfield says she is “excited to see the visible evidence of some of the work that has been going on behind the scenes, and we hope the community will be as excited about this as we are.”
The Lyric Performing Arts Company was founded in July of 2002 and to date has raised just shy of $1,000,000 for the renovation project. Humfield said half of that money was donated last year by the Girling Foundation., with the rest coming from various fundraising activities.
Humfield said that it was hard to predict the final completion date of the project, as the board of directors for the Lyric Performing Arts Company had made a pact to complete the project without borrowing any money.
Once the theatre is competed it will seat approximately 400 guests and will be used for several live productions each year and will be available for businesses and civic organizations to use according to Humfield.
