SmithLydiaLydia Smith, 70, formerly of San Saba, passed away peacefully at home in Belton on Sunday, January 8, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in San Saba, Texas.  A Rosary was held on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Blaylock Funeral Chapel in San Saba. Interment will be at China Creek Cemetery in San Saba.

Lydia was born on August 28, 1941 to the late Santos Cantu and Guadalupe Mendoza Cantu in San Saba.  She married Jerry Don Smith on February 16, 1963.  Lydia and Jerry Don were married for 48 blessed years and had two children: Carlus Smith and Karen Smith Martinez. Lydia was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Temple. She loved her family and friends and was particularly proud of her granddaughter and great grandson. Lydia was always kind and gracious and enjoyed helping others.  She loved to be active being outdoors, gardening, traveling, and gambling.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Don Smith of Belton; a son, Carlus Smith and wife, Jennifer of Belton; a daughter, Karen Martinez and husband, Jesse of Temple; a granddaughter, Chelsea Smith of Belton; a great grandson, Braylon Shane Borrego also of Belton; her step-grandchildren, Ben, Sam, Nate, Sarah and Katlyn; her mother, Guadalupe Mendoza Cantu of Brownwood; five sisters Mary Flores, Susanna Lowe, Yolanda Jimenez all of San Saba, Sulema Orr of Brownwood, Josie Harlin of Zephyr; two brothers Tony Cantu of San Saba, and Manuel Cantu of Corpus Christi.  Also left to cherish her memory are twenty nieces and ten nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Santos Cantu; a sister, Lucia Luna and brother, Richard Cantu.

Lydia will always be loved and will be missed dearly. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the San Saba County EMS. Services have been entrusted to the care of Blaylock Funeral Chapel of San Saba.
