Since 1991, United Supermarkets and its family of partners and suppliers have gathered annually for a fun day of golf and fellowship to raise funds their charity partners.  Now in its 24th year, the event has raised almost $3 million for charities.

“The Jacky Pierce Charity Classic is the cornerstone of our company’s commitment to making an impact in the communities we serve by addressing significant local issues,” said Robert Taylor, president of The United Family. “The United Way shares our emphasis on making the Brownwood area a better place to live, and we are honored to support their organizations throughout Texas and New Mexico.”

The tournament website speaks of Pierce fondly, stating the following:  On August 23, 2002 United Supermarkets lost a dear friend. Jacky Pierce, long time produce director, lost a battle with cancer that he had fought with the same type of honor and dignity that he had lived his life. A good friend and colleague, mentor and teacher, Jacky touched his coworkers in many ways. That’s because Jacky was a man who was passionate in his relationships with his guests and partners, his co-workers, his friends and family.  Many of those relationships were solidified on the golf course. Jacky often noted that you could tell the measure of a man by playing a round of golf with him, and the game became like glue to cement long lasting friendships with co-workers, partners and friends alike.

Not surprisingly, United’s Charity Classic each September became Jacky’s favorite activity of the year. He guided the event from its infancy in the early 1990s to an event that now raises more than $300,000 for charity annually.  Jacky believed the purpose of the tournament was two-fold:  to provide an opportunity for United team members to host loyal partners with a fun day of golf and to raise money for an important cause at the same time.  In honor of his dedication to the Charity Classic, the event was renamed the Jacky Pierce Charity Classic in 2003.

Whether it was selecting the finest strawberries from growers in California or coordinating the golf tournament, Jacky threw his heart and soul into everything he did.  Jacky is greatly missed; especially his smile and laugh, compassion and encouragement. He represented the heart and soul of United Supermarkets.  We will always cherish the moments we had with him and will never forget what we learned about lasting relationships from this wonderful man. His passion for life is the legacy he leaves with us and that makes us better for having known him.
