Brownwood Fire Department was called to a fire at a local restaurant and landmark, Smitty’s BBQ, located at 708 W. Austin Avenue in Brownwood, at 6:45am Wednesday morning. By 7:00 am, the fire was extinguished; however the property sustained extensive damage.
According to Brownwood Fire Captain Kevin Barcliff, the fire was located in the restaurant and kitchen area of the building. This area received moderate fire damage and heavy smoke damage.
“We got the fire knocked out pretty quick, but the property is heavily damaged” stated Barcliff.
There were no injuries according to fire officials. The owner was on scene at the time of the fire, went to the other room and returned to find the fire according to Barcliff.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is still under investigation.
