Written by Amanda Coers – Travis Curry, co-owner of Just Teasin’ Hair Salon, feels true beauty is found within. It’s an unusual sentiment for a cosmetologist.
“Beauty is what’s on the inside, and I want to bring the inside out,” Curry explained. “There’s a lot of people who have really beautiful spirits. I like to bring that beauty from within and let it radiate out into the world.”
Curry worked as a nurse for eight years before a back injury caused a shift in his career path. With his love of art and creative nature in mind, he decided to attend cosmetology school after his sister began her studies.
“So I went, and they started calling me the young Paul Mitchell because I caught on really well,” he laughed. Over twenty years later, Curry is still going strong and loving his work.
“I always try to keep a smile on my face, and I want to make people feel good and that’s something I can do in this industry, I can boost their self esteem,” he said. “I love when someone comes in and they’ve been having a bad day and we can fix them up and they leave with confidence, ready to take on the world.”
Curry himself takes on quite a bit, volunteering with both the Brownwood Jaycees as the Membership Vice President, and the Texas Jaycees as the Program Manager for Membership. His involvement with the Jaycees began out of a desire to connect with an active volunteer group.
“I wanted to be able to grow, not only my business, but myself,” he said. “I really like the spirit of the Jaycees, they’re really accepting. It’s like a family unit. I have lifelong friendships, and I’ve met people from all over the world at conventions. I’ve made friends all over the world.”
He also volunteers to assist the ARK Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Shelter in Brownwood. After seeing the ARK’s “Empty Shoes” exhibit that honors domestic violence victims who have lost their lives, he felt compelled to help the organization, first by donating clothing and other items, then progressing to volunteer hours at the shelter and for fundraising events.
Even through his business, Curry is looking to give back to his community by working to keep his prices as low as he can, making beauty affordable for all levels of income.
“I feel like everybody should get a chance to get a nice haircut,” Curry said. “Single moms who are watching every penny, they need to feel beautiful too. I want women to afford these higher end beauty treatments. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful.”
Curry’s Just Teasin’ Hair Salon is currently offering $10 haircuts for children throughout the month of August, along with $5 eyebrow or lip waxes for back-to-school.
“I like to give back to the community, because I feel like what you put out is what you get back. I want that positive energy. I just like to make people feel good.”
